課程概述 |
本課程帶領學生執行研究計畫、撰寫研究論文，藉此輔助學生強化英文寫作技巧，並培養原創思考及邏輯分析、批判論辯能力。第一學期將透過共同閱讀一本小說及相關文學批評，藉由不同作業演練研究論文的各項步驟，並完成一篇短論文；第二學期則讓學生自由選擇題目，寫就一篇完整研究論文。高段班英文寫作同時也在訓練嚴謹的思辨方法；所謂的「研究能力」將不僅適用於學術世界，亦可廣泛應用於各專業領域。
本課程以英語授課。 |

課程目標 |
This yearlong course aims to make you an independent thinker and a sophisticated writer of English by helping you develop abilities to conduct research and write research papers. In the fall semester, we focus on the methods of identifying an important topic, formulating a strong thesis, finding useful resources, and evaluating research material effectively, as well as general writing and reasoning techniques. In spring, we will take everything a step further and help you enhance your competence in writing professionally. The course is designed with the conviction that learning to write research papers can be instrumental in honing one’s critical and creative thinking skills, something that will prove invaluable in pretty much every professional field, including but not limited to the academic world.
In fall, you are to produce a series of assignments that are intended to familiarize you with the steps of writing a research paper, and eventually finish a paper of at least 1,500 words, which will go through revision. We will read a novel together and use it, along with critical work on it, to walk you through the process. In spring, you are to produce a research paper of at least 2,500 words and revise it at least once, on a topic of your choice. |

1) Prepare in advance, come to class, and participate.
2) Submit clean work.
3) Do not procrastinate.
4) Work as a team.
5) Be responsible.
6) Plagiarism or receiving outside help (the instructor aside) on the writing assignments will not be tolerated. |
